SANTA
FE SPRINGS POLICING TEAM
In 1995 the city of Whittier signed an historical police
services contract with its neighboring city, Santa
Fe Springs. The Whittier Police Department was
contracted to provide all law enforcement services to
the resident and business community of Santa Fe Springs.
The Whittier Police Department established a Santa Fe
Springs patrol division consisting of 28 officers. Also
established was a Santa Fe Springs detective bureau,
traffic bureau, Problem Oriented
Policing Team, a High Risk
Warrant Entry Team and a Special
Occurrence Response Team (SORT).
Since taking over the police services in the city of
Santa Fe Springs, the Whittier police team was able to
reduce crime considerably. In the last several years,
there was a significant drop in violent crimes in the
city. This dramatic drop in crime can be attributed to
the community based policing program instituted by the
Whittier Police Department.
Officers get involved in community activities daily.
From teaching classes in elementary schools and holding
business security seminars, to bicycle patrol of parks
and shopping centers, the Whittier Police Department
built public confidence and improved the relationship
between residents and the police. When the community
feels good about their police department, they are more
likely to report problems.
The Whittier Police Department improved response time to
both emergency calls as well as routine report calls. A
team of Public Safety Officers (PSOs) help patrol
officers with daily tasks such as report taking, traffic
control and contact with he community.
The Police Services Center building serves as the
Whittier Police "Sub Station" in Santa Fe
Springs. It is staffed by city personnel, PSOs and
houses the detective bureau and problem oriented
policing team. The Staging Facility which is also
located in Santa Fe Springs, houses the patrol division.
