Robbery - Suspects In Custody- Posted Thursday, May 18, 2006
Whittier, Ca - At 4:09 PM today, Whittier Police received a report of an armed robbery at Public Storage, 12320 E. Whittier Boulevard, corner of Whittier and Putnam. Suspects were described as three male Hispanics, age 16-23, wearing black and white bandanas and dark clothing. The weapon was a rifle. Loss was $500 in cash. The suspects fled in a newer model light green or aqua passenger car with no plates. A helicopter from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department conducted an air search for the vehicle.

At 4:39 PM, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was at the AM/PM Mini Mart at Slauson/Pioneer, when he saw a suspicious subject standing by a vehicle in the parking lot. The deputy knew his airship was searching for our robbery suspects and detained this subject, along with two other individuals. The victim and witnesses from the robbery were taken to the scene and positively identified the vehicle and two of the suspects. All three were taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered a .22 caliber rifle from the vehicle.

Further investigation revealed a potential outstanding suspect. Witnesses reported that suspect possibly entered a restroom at a nearby gas station. Officers searched the business with negative results. Whittier Police, Los Angeles County Sheriff, and California Highway Patrol officers locked down the area and began a systematic search for the suspect. The search was suspended shortly before 8 PM. The investigation continues.

Homicide- Posted Sunday, May 14, 2006

The Whittier Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a murder suspect who shot a 17 year old male at a party in Santa Fe Springs and wounded another 17 year old male in the leg. At 2:31 am, officers responded to a shots fired call at 11515 Joslin Street, in Santa Fe Springs. Arriving, officers found a large amount of blood and later learned the victim had been transported by party-goers to a local hospital. Officers then responded to the hospital where the 17 year old victim was pronounced dead while the other was being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and is now in stable condition.

Over 60 people were detained at the scene while detectives began investigating this crime. Shortly thereafter, it was learned that a verbal conflict arose at the party that let to a fight followed by gunfire. The preliminary investigation revealed this crime was gang-related. Detectives are aggressively investigating this case; however anyone with information is encouraged to call the Whittier Police Department at (562) 945-8250.

Open House & “Kids – Fit for Life” Health Fair- Posted Wednesday, May 3, 2006
The annual Whittier Police Department Open House and “Kids – Fit for Life” Health Fair is set for Saturday, May 20, 2006, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This marks the second year the Health Fair, sponsored by the Whittier Social Services Commission will be held in conjunction with the Police Open House. Together they create an event that addresses the safety, health and fitness of our community and its youth.

The Police Department Open House takes place during National Police Week, a time when law enforcement agencies throughout the country pay tribute to officers killed in the line of duty.

The Health Fair will feature a “Kiddie-K” Fun Run for youth ages 1 to 12 years. Kids pre-registered for the fun run will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag and all participants will receive a medal. The event will also include free health screenings, a live band, a rock climb, informational displays, and police tactical demonstrations. Tours of the police station and jail will be conducted throughout the day.

National Police Week / May 14-20, 2006- Posted Wednesday, May 3, 2006
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 designating May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. The law was amended by the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, Public Law 103-322, signed by President Bill Clinton, directing that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15 each year.

National Police Week recognizes and honors fallen law enforcement officers in ceremonies throughout the country. In 2005, 64 officers lost their lives on duty. Eighteen of these individuals were from the state of California.

Assault w/ Deadly Weapon- Posted Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Whittier, CA. – On Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at approximately 1615 hours, the Whittier Police Department received a call of a stabbing that had just occurred at the Quizno’s, located at 6754 Greenleaf Avenue. After securing the scene and attending to the victim, officers were able to gather information pertaining to what occurred. While three males were dining at Quizno’s, a middle-aged Male Hispanic (victim) approached them and began to converse with them. According to an employee at the restaurant, the males began arguing, and shortly thereafter, one of the patrons described as a Male Black (suspect), approximately 5’6” tall and weighing 160 pounds, produced a knife and stabbed the Male Hispanic (victim) once in the ribs. The Male Black suspect fled the restruant with two other male Hispanics who were dining with him in a southbound direction on Greenleaf Ave. Shortly thereafter, the Male Hispanic victim collapsed and employees called the Police. The victim was airlifted to Los Angeles County Medical Center for treatment. The three suspects are outstanding and detectives were called to the scene to investigate.
