Whittier is a progressive city of approximately 85,000
residents, located 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

The Whittier Police Department provides a variety of law
enforcement services to the citizens of Whittier and
Santa Fe Springs. The Department is comprised of the
Patrol, Investigation, Support Services and
Administration Bureaus. The Police Department features a
great team comprised of 128 sworn police officers, and
54 civilian staff. The City Council and community
strongly support the outstanding men and women of the
Whittier Police Department. The Whittier Police
Department has developed a highly successful Community
Based Policing Program. A cornerstone of this model
program is a partnership between the Police Department,
city residents and businesses to produce a high quality
of life for all citizens.

SALARY
$4038 - $5304 per month (next
contract negotiations 9/05)
The initial salary depends on qualifications. Salary
increases are normally granted based on job performance,
length of service, and labor market adjustments. All
Lateral hires serve a one-year probationary period.
POST BONUS
4% Bonus for Intermediate Post
Certificate
5% Additional bonus for Advanced Post Certificate
WORK SCHEDULE
Patrol: 4/10 and 3/12 shifts
Three patrol teams cover Monday-Thursday 4/10
(days, swings, graveyard) with Friday-Sunday Off. Three
other patrol teams cover Friday-Saturday 3/12 (days,
swings, graveyard) with Monday-Thursday Off.
Inside personnel: 4/10 shifts
Investigations, Traffic, Administration and
other specialized units.
RETIREMENT
Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)
3% at 50 Plan, with the Single Highest Year
Formula. The 9% employee
contribution is fully paid by the City. There
is no deduction for Social Security.
SPECIALTY PAY
Officers assigned to specialty details receive the
following specialty pay: Detectives
$200/mo, FTOs $200/mo when training, Administration $200/mo, Team
Leaders $250/mo, Motors 5%, Corporals 7%.
PATROL OPERATIONS BENEFITS
Crime report system consists of dictating
reports in the field using micro cassette recorders.
Tapes are turned in at the end of a shift and are typed
by the support personnel. Full time jail staff to handle
pictures, prints and processing of arrestees, expediting
the booking process. CSO units assist patrol by taking
cold crime reports, collision reports, and performing
traffic control duties.
BILINGUAL PAY
$120 per month
for Spanish language.
HEALTH INSURANCE
The City pays a substantial portion of the premiums for
medical and dental insurance and provides term life
insurance.
HOLIDAYS
10 1/2 days per year.
VACATION LEAVE
10 days per year up to a maximum of 24 days per year
after 20 years of service plus credit for prior law
enforcement service.
SICK LEAVE
12 days per year plus credit for accrued non-compensated
time for prior law enforcement service.
PERSONAL LEAVE
3 days per year may be charged to accrued sick leave.
Flexible Benefit Plan Allows employee payment of
insurance premiums, medical and dependent care expenses
with Pre-Tax dollars, increasing take-home pay.
OTHER BENEFITS INCLUDE:

QUALIFICATIONS
Current employment as a Peace Officer with a California
law enforcement agency, and graduation from a POST
accredited academy. Candidates who are Bilingual in
Spanish and possess a college degree are highly
desirable. Possession of or ability to obtain a
Class C California Driver's license and a satisfactory
driving record.
AGE AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
21 years of age or older at the time of appointment.
Weight proportionate to height in accordance with
recognized standards. Physically able to perform the
duties of a Police Officer. Eyesight must not be less
than 20/80 uncorrected, corrected to 20/20. Normal
hearing and color perception as required by P.O.S.T.

to meet the Police Department's needs.
Candidates will be required, as a prerequisite to
employment, to successfully pass a physical exam,
including a drug screen, extensive background
investigation, polygraph and psychological examinations.
The cost of the exams will be paid by the City.
