BAKER
TO VEGAS
The Whittier Police Department takes part in the yearly
law enforcement running tradition known as the
"Baker to Vegas" run.
The phrase Baker to Vegas refers to the Challenge Cup
Relay; A 120-mile, 20-stage foot relay race, which
starts in Baker, California (gateway to Death Valley),
through the California desert, over the mountains, to
Las Vegas, Nevada. The teams are restricted to Law
Enforcement teams (Police and Sheriff departments,
judges, bailiffs, and other agencies and service teams).
The race course travels from Baker, California through
the Mojave desert to the town of Shoshone, California
then north to Pahrump, Nevada over the highest point on
the course Mountain Springs pass (5600') and the lights
of Las Vegas. Each of the team's 20 runners averages 6
miles per stage.
Competing against 16 Law Enforcement Agencies within the
150-officer Division, the Whittier Police Department
1999 Baker to Vegas Running Team came in at FIRST PLACE!
The team, comprised of a Captain, a Lieutenant, three
Sergeants and fifteen Officers ran a total relay of 15
hours and 48 minutes, coming in 1/2 hour before the next
team finished.
All of the teams are responsible for providing their own
logistics and support efforts, including communications.
In 1997, the Whittier Police Department Baker to Vegas
running team won third place in their division. In 1998
the team won second place in their division. In 2000,
the team finished 7th in the division. In 2001,
the team finished 5th in the division. In 2002 the team
finished 7th. A large staff of sworn and civilian
employees volunteer each year to provide the runners
with support throughout the run and of course... a lot
of water.
Each team has a follow vehicle that follows the runners
from the beginning of the race to the finish line. The
follow vehicle team is responsible for providing runners
with water, first aid if needed and of course plenty of
vocal support. Two alternate runners are in the
follow vehicle at all times, in case a runner gets hurt
and falls out of the run. |
